Cubans Mark 84th Birthday of Revolution Heroine

|
Cubans marked on Monday the 84th birthday of Vilma Espin (April 7, 1930 – June 18, 2007), who headed the Cuban Women’s Federation for years and became a major fighter of Cuban independence and the rights of women.
Espin was an outstanding member of the rebel movement led by Revolution leader Fidel Castro and she also struggled to guarantee the children and women rights. She was a member of the Cuban Communist Party Central Committee since its foundation in 1965, of the Council of State and deputy to the National Assembly of People’s Power (Parliament).
Thanks to Espin’s efforts, Cuba now shows important achievements as to gender equality and the protection of children. Her merits were acknowledged with many national and international distinctions, such as the title of Heroine of the Republic of Cuba.

In memory of 9 April 1958

|
In April 1958 there were no fights in the Sierra Maestra.
Che Guevara set up a school for future guerrillas at Minas del Frío (Escuela de Reclutas Ciro Redondo - in memory of his fallen comrade), dug trenches, built fortifications, cured people, helped local women at childbirth and read as usual. This time he read Mao Ce Tung's book about guerrilla warfare and studied Cuban history.
On 9th April the 26th July Movement called a general strike to take place all over the island but it was a failure.
You can read a long article about it (in Spanish, of course) - published on the website titled Granma, that is the official page of the Cuban Communist Party.

|
A special dance performance will debut by the Brasilian Cia Carne Agonizante.
The show - that bears the title Estado Independente (Independent State) - was inspired by the life and work of the legendary Argentine-Cuban revolutionary, Ernesto Che Guevara. It was directed by Sandro Borelli.
The performance will be shown on 20th April at the Kasulo Espaço de Cultura e Arte in São Paulo, Brazil. There is no entrance fee.

Cuban reading list
|
Cuba is ripe with stories; it has a history so utterly unique and dramatic that many people both Cuban and otherwise have brought its past to life with stunning and compelling narratives. There is no more immersive way to experience a country without traveling there than through their stories and sagas, their collective imagination and memory.
Here is a list of some of my personal favorites and some classics to get your mind primed for la vida loca that is Cuba.
La Edad de Oro, José Martí (1889)
Our Man in Havana, Graham Greene (1958)
Before Night Falls, Reinaldo Arenas (1992)
Dirty Havana Trilogy, Pedro Juan Gutiérrez (2000)
The Motorcycle Diaries, Ernesto Guevara (1995)
You'll see copies of this in many a young traveler's hand throughout Central/South America, now immortalized on screen in the popular movie starring Gael Garcia Bernal. This is 23-year-old Che Guevara's lively travel diaries recording his journey across the continent with his best friend Alberto Granado. If you're interested in the development of that iconic character, the formation of his identity and political beliefs beyond the myth, then this book is vital. It also offers a snapshot of the chronic poverty of 1950s Latin America.
Three Trapped Tigers, Guillermo Cabrera Infante (1965)
Cecilia Valdés, Cirilo Villaverde (1839-1882)
The Old Man and the Sea, Ernest Hemingway (1952)

Új design | New design

Új design került a honlapra - fél esztendő alatt a negyedik. Ahogyan már megszokhattátok, egyszerű darab lett, de ebben legalább illik Che-hez.
Remélem, mindenkinek elnyeri a tetszését.
|
A new design has been uploaded on the website - the fourth one within half a year. As you could get used to it, it became a simple piece, but at least it suits Che in its simplicity.
I hope all of you will like it.

Ernesto Che Guevara, the Argentine-born revolutionary, minister, guerrilla leader and writer, received his medical degree in Buenos Aires, then played an essential part in the Cuban Revolution in liberating and rebuilding the country. He did his best to set up the Cuban economy, fought for the improvement of the education and the health system, the elimination of illiteracy and racial prejudice. He promoted voluntary work by his own example. He fought in the Congo and in Bolivia - he was thirty-nine years old, when he was trapped and executed by the joint American-Bolivian forces.
