Che Guevara's last 24 hours

|
The well-known work of the lawyer and journalist Jaime Horta Díaz reflects on the time between the capture on Sunday, 8th October and the murder on Monday, 9th October 1967, of the former minister, the Argentine-Cuban Ernesto Che Guevara.
In La Cueva, the mythical meeting point of the Grupo de Barranquilla (Group of Barranquilla, whose eighth member is Horta Díaz and whose member was the late author, Gabriel García Márquez) Jaime Horta Díaz presented his latest book, titled Las últimas 24 horas del Che Guevara (Che Guevara's last 24 hours).
“The truth is that I prefer the young dreamer, the freshly graduated doctor, who travelled around his country by bicycle and then travelled around the continent by motorbike in the company of his friend, Antonio Granado, the biochemistry graduate”, revealed the lawyer and journalist.
The book, according to Horta Díaz, actually started with the criticism of the Soviet Union, the campaign in the Congo and finally the Bolivian adventure where Che lost his life.
It also claims that the Bolivian president, René Barrientos offered 40,000,000 (forty million) dollars ransom for Che, but no one replied. The Cuban leadership was more interested in denying any links with the guerrillas, even though they trained the rebels and supported them financially.
One of the most dramatic moments was the destiny of the corpse: no country, political party or organisation wanted to have it. Only Che's brother, the lawyer Roberto Guevara tried to obtain the remains of the guerrilla leader - unsuccessfully.

Ernesto Che Guevara, the Argentine-born revolutionary, minister, guerrilla leader and writer, received his medical degree in Buenos Aires, then played an essential part in the Cuban Revolution in liberating and rebuilding the country. He did his best to set up the Cuban economy, fought for the improvement of the education and the health system, the elimination of illiteracy and racial prejudice. He promoted voluntary work by his own example. He fought in the Congo and in Bolivia - he was thirty-nine years old, when he was trapped and executed by the joint American-Bolivian forces.
