Series about Lives of Bolivian Guerrillas Who Died Fighting with Che Guevara Premiers
|
Cuban Director Froilan Gonzalez says series hopes to “rescue historical memory.”
Semillas de (Seeds of) Ñacahuasú, a new miniseries of documentaries investigating the lives of 20 Bolivian guerrillas that died fighting alongside Ernesto Che Guevara in their country, premiered in the vice presidency of Bolivia on Wednesday.
More than 100 people attended the ceremony, where the first two parts of a 21 part series were publicly screened.
Cuban director Froilan Gonzalez said the idea is to look into who the men were, where they came from, and why they fought.
Understanding the past, he said, is critical to confronting the future. “It is very important to rescue this historical memory, because revolution and change do not simply arise out of nowhere, they come from an accumulative process that we must not forget or become unaware of, because he who is not familiar with his history does not have his feet sufficiently planted on the ground to be able to face the present and much less the future.”
The first guerrilla explored in the series is Apolinar Aquino Quispe, a guerrilla who died fighting the CIA-backed Bolivian army in August 1967, just weeks before Che himself would be illegally executed.
His granddaughter attended the film series premier, and she says the documentaries help to inspire younger generations to continue struggling for the same ideals.
“We used to have to fight with weapons, blood, and death. Now, we the youth, those who share this ideology, we can do it with our way of thinking and with our own actions,” she said.
This October 9 will mark the 47th anniversary of the death of revolutionary Che Guevara in Bolivia.

Bolivia: La Higuera y Vallegrande - La ruta del Che
Here is an amazing report (illustrated with interesting photographs) about the famous La Ruta del Che (Che's way) in Bolivia. There Che Guevara spent the last days of his life.
The article was written in Spanish but it should not matter as we all know the story and the photos attacked to the text are wonderful.

Sao Paulo Forum Remembers Che Guevara
|
La Paz, Aug 28 (Prensa Latina) The official inauguration of the Sao Paulo forum was a bright oportunity to remember Argentinian-Cuban guerrilla Che Guevara. In a very much aplauded speech in the opening session before some 1,000 delegates and guests, Secretary of International Relations of the Sandinista National Liberation Front (FSLN), Jacinto Suarez, highlighted the life and work of Che Guevara, who was killed in La Higuera, Bolivia, on October 9, 1967.
"We, representatives of the Latin American left-wing, have gathered here in Bolivia and our first memory is that of the greatest citizen Latin America has ever had, a man who died in this land. Our first words are to remember Ernesto Che Guevara," he said.
Suarez ended his speech with "Onwards to Victory Forever", a phrase first used by Guevara in his farewell letter addressed to Cuban leader Fidel Castro, read on October 3, 1965, when the legendary guerrilla was fighting in Congo.
Suarez also considered that this Forum is attended by "we, the ones forging the present and the future of Latin America, who will carry on with the fate of our people."
He said this Forum "allows us to know and understand each other and discuss the agenda to build a new world, and only with integration we can be free, can be strong."

Ernesto Che Guevara, the Argentine-born revolutionary, minister, guerrilla leader and writer, received his medical degree in Buenos Aires, then played an essential part in the Cuban Revolution in liberating and rebuilding the country. He did his best to set up the Cuban economy, fought for the improvement of the education and the health system, the elimination of illiteracy and racial prejudice. He promoted voluntary work by his own example. He fought in the Congo and in Bolivia - he was thirty-nine years old, when he was trapped and executed by the joint American-Bolivian forces.
