Extensive Day in Villa Clara for May 1st

Heroes of work paid homage for Che Guevara
22 Heroes of Labour of the Republic of Cuba (from agriculture) visited Ernesto Guevara Sculptural Complex (Complejo Escultórico Ernesto Guevara) in Santa Clara, where they celebrated the Heroic Guerrilla.
Petronila Neyra, who has been a Hero of Labour for more than a decade, working as a harvester of coffee in the province of Guantánamo, said that visiting the place where the remains of Che and his comrades lay, are proud to Cubans. She also emphasized that volunteer work is essential to obtain the status [of the Hero of Labour] and that this is one of the main principles of Che Guevara's ideology.
Berta Hernandez, who classifies tobacco leaves in the province of Pinar del Rio, promised to double her daily work and to take part in the development of the nation.
Ezequiel Cantillo, who received the award 17 years ago, is still working over 10 hours a day in the coffee company of Yateras in Guantánamo.
Miguel Contreras, a member of the National Secretariat of Agroforestry Union, said that the programme in Villa Clara includes a tour of the National Research Institute (INIVIT - Instituto Nacional de Investigaciones de Viandas Tropicales) to exchange experiences with other, especially younger workers.

Ernesto Che Guevara, the Argentine-born revolutionary, minister, guerrilla leader and writer, received his medical degree in Buenos Aires, then played an essential part in the Cuban Revolution in liberating and rebuilding the country. He did his best to set up the Cuban economy, fought for the improvement of the education and the health system, the elimination of illiteracy and racial prejudice. He promoted voluntary work by his own example. He fought in the Congo and in Bolivia - he was thirty-nine years old, when he was trapped and executed by the joint American-Bolivian forces.
